About

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has been a key partner in Sudan’s environmental sustainability efforts since the 1990s. Following a comprehensive post-conflict environmental assessment in 2007, UNEP established a strong country presence and developed an integrated environmental program.

A central pillar of UNEP’s work in Sudan is the conservation of ecosystems and biodiversity, which are vital to the country’s natural heritage. Sudan’s diverse landscapes, from the wetlands to the arid ecosystems of the Sahara and the rich biodiversity of the Dinder National Park, are not only ecologically significant but also sustain livelihoods, cultural traditions, and resilience against climate change.

UNEP collaborates with federal and state governments, international organizations, civil society, academia, the private sector, and local communities to ensure the sustainable management of Sudan’s natural resources. This work is essential for achieving peace, recovery, and development in an environmentally sustainable manner while safeguarding Sudan’s unique natural heritage for future generations.
