My name is Yonathan Ayalew, and I serve as a Programme Policy Officer with WFP, based at Headquarter. In my role, I provide technical guidance, policy support, and strategic oversight for the Food Assistance for Assets (FFA) programme. This global initiative focuses on ecosystem restoration, rehabilitation of community infrastructure, and livelihood strengthening to help vulnerable populations build resilience against recurring shocks and long‑term stressors.
My work involves supporting country offices in designing high‑quality FFA projects, ensuring alignment with corporate standards, strengthening monitoring and reporting systems, and promoting evidence‑based programming. I closely collaborate with regional bureaux, field teams, government counterparts, and technical partners to ensure that programme interventions are context‑appropriate, climate‑responsive, and capable of generating sustainable impacts for food-insecure households.
The FFA programme is currently active in more than 60 countries across Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and South America, implementing activities that range from soil and water conservation, watershed rehabilitation, and regenerative agriculture to the construction or restoration of community assets such as feeder roads, water harvesting structures, irrigation systems, and flood‑control measures.
Through these interventions, the programme aims not only to address immediate food and nutrition needs but also to strengthen long‑term resilience, enhance community capacity, and support pathways toward improved livelihoods and self‑reliance.
