Our mission

Since 1986, the Rio de Janeiro Reforestation Program, known as Refloresta Rio, has restored 3,400 ha and planted 10 million seedlings of native Atlantic forest species across 92 neighbourhoods in the city. More than 15,000 local residents from low-income communities have been trained in restoration skills, and received compensation for their services performed and measured in the field since the program began. This established system of payments for restoration provides the only source of income for 60% of the families that work with us, and directly employs around 500 community members.
