Contribution to the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration

Forests Canada is proud to be designated an official Referring Partner and Implementer of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.

Ecosystem restoration begins long before quality seeds are collected and continues long after new seedlings take root. It’s an ongoing commitment to understanding ecosystems, and helping forests recover, rebuild, and become more resilient where it's needed most:

• Strengthen forest resilience: Healthy, diverse forests are better able to withstand wildfires, extreme weather events, pests, and invasive species.
• Safeguard clean air and water: Forests act as natural filters, improving water and air quality.
• Improve biodiversity: Forests support a rich variety of plants and animals, helping to restore and improve damaged ecosystems.
• Create homes and food for wildlife: By restoring forest ecosystems, we help ensure wildlife have the habitat, shelter, and natural food sources they need to survive and thrive.
• Support communities: Investing in forest restoration means investing in people, generating jobs, and sustaining local economies in communities across the country.

The trees and shrubs we plant help sustain biological diversity, expand habitat for wildlife, and strengthen nature’s resilience. They also play a critical role in mitigating the impacts of climate change, including wildfire and extreme weather. Through this work, we are improving the long‑term health and resilience of Canada’s forests and the communities that depend on them.
