About

To achieve the Comprehensive Restoration of the Mexican Islands a strong collaborative approach is vital. For 25 years, an alliance has been made between  the National Commission for Natural Protected Areas (CONANP) and the civil society organization Grupo de Ecología y Conservación de Islas (GECI)

Our mission is to comprehensively conserve and ensure the sustainable development of islands through a multidisciplinary approach.

We work through the following strategic programs:

Seabird conservation: We conduct systematic monitoring and applied research in seabird colonies and use active restoration methods to induce the recolonization of colonies extirpated by invasive mammals, human disturbances, or the impacts of  climate change.

Plant community conservation: We implement  active restoration measures to accelerate plant community recovery after removing invasive mammals,  promoting landscape connectivity, restorating ecological functions and environmental services, and increasing island ecosystem resilience.

Insular ecosystem restoration: We facilitate the recovery of island ecosystems by removing invasive alien species, particularly mammals, which are the main drivers of extinction for island endemic species.

Island biosecurity: We develop prevention, early detection and rapid response strategies and protocols to protect island ecosystems from invasive alien species in close collaboration with  local communities and the federal government.

Environmental education: We implement campaigns to foster environmental stewardship and strenghthen relationships with communities connected to Mexican islands, building trust and collaboration to support conservation efforts through shared learning.

Communication: We disseminate the ecological, economic, and social importance of islands, sharing conservation messages and inviting the public to take action to protect these ecosystems.

Environmental management and public policy: We work to increase awareness among decision-makers about the biodiversity of Mexican islands and provide scientific support  to improve island management and protection.
