We believe that local farmers are at the forefront of efforts to adapt to and mitigate the impacts of climate change. They not only play a role as land managers, but also as agents of change, able to restore ecosystems while maintaining the welfare of their communities.
Good Forests Foundation Uganda (GFU) focuses on landscape restoration through an agroforestry approach in Uganda. By combining indigenous tree species with intercrops such as cocoa, GFU shows that restoration efforts can go hand in hand with increased income for local farmers. In addition to working at the grassroots level, GFU is also committed to Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR) and building resilient value chains. GFU empowers farmers by providing them with:
– A diverse selection of seedlings: Timber trees, fruit trees, and commodity trees, a variety that enriches both the land and livelihoods.
– Comprehensive training: Equipping farmers with the skills to adopt sustainable agroforestry practices and unlock the full potential of their land.
– Transparency and responsibility: The planted trees are monitored using an app called TREEO to ensure the growth and carbon absorption data are accurate.
Since 2019, GFU has supported over 6,518 farmers by distributing over 2,140,962 seedlings, reforesting 2,942 hectares through 19 community tree nursery beds. This agroforestry system boosts incomes for farmers and communities by creating a continuous flow of harvests. With a mix of crops that mature at different times, there's always something to reap, ensuring a steady stream of income.
Today, GFU continues to build on its strong foundation as a locally registered non-profit expanding its impact across Uganda. With an experienced team and strong local partnerships, GFU is committed to restoring forests and creating sustainable economic opportunities for local communities.
