Our mission

The International Model Forest Network (IMFN) is a voluntary global community of practice whose members and supporters work toward the sustainable management of forest‐based landscapes and natural resources through the Model Forest approach.

IUCN and IMFN are working together to advance tailored gender-responsive forest landscape restoration (FLR) in Model Forests to achieve climate, biodiversity, and socioeconomic benefits. Through capacity building, knowledge exchange, design of intervention and tool packages, and development of technical and policy knowledge products, this initiative is supporting landscape restoration and sustainable land management in diverse community forests.

Impact

Through this initiative, IUCN has worked alongside local communities to document the current state of landscape restoration and gender equity in Model Forests in Latin America, West Africa, and Southeast Asia. To date, this initiative has catalogued ongoing restoration activities as well as restoration potential, produced a gender-forward forest landscape restoration (FLR) incubation and acceleration protocol for use in community-managed forest landscapes, facilitated South-South knowledge exchange and lessons sharing on topics such as value chain development and fire management, and contributed to capacity building for Model Forest managers, all while amplifying the visibility of the Model Forests and the sustainable livelihood benefits enabled by them.
